Abstract

The article analyzes the development of Ho Chi Minh City's marine economy in the period of 2017 - 2024. The results indicate significant progress in diverse development of industries, sustainability, ability to apply science and technology and innovation. During this period, import and export through Ho Chi Minh City ports contributed 1,068.1 billion USD, an average of 133.5 billion USD per year; the marine tourism industry contributed 104,961 billion VND, an average of 13,120.1 billion VND per year; the production value of coastal industries in the area contributed 4.85 million billion VND, an average of 603,310.6 billion VND per year. In 2024, the maritime transport industry contributed 35,909.7 billion VND, accounting for 1.32% of total GRDP; total import-export turnover through ports will reach 151.2 billion USD, equal to 1.39 times that of GRDP; the production value of coastal industries will contribute VND 733,173 billion, accounting for 26.99% of GRDP. Nevertheless, challenges remain, including limited planning for new marine economic development space; unstable development between industries; limited transport infrastructure connecting the central region with coastal areas and seaports; the marine tourism industry lacks specific products; the coastal industry has not been properly invested in and developed. Based on these findings, six strategic solutions are recommended to realize the goal of developing Ho Chi Minh City into a dynamic and leading effective marine economic center in the region.
